LASAM Comments on Proposal to Incorporate ASAM Criteria into Medicaid
On November 26, the Louisiana Society of Addiction Medicine (LASAM) sent a comment letter to agency stakeholders at Louisiana Medicaid, providing feedback on a proposal to implement the 4th Edition of The ASAM Criteria.
In the letter, LASAM commended the agency for recognizing the importance of adopting The ASAM Criteria and shared several recommendations to more smoothly and completely implement all aspects of the 4th Edition. First, LASAM noted that the 4th Edition of The ASAM Criteria introduces new standards for a concise level of care assessment for patient placement. Additionally, the Fourth Edition Level of Care Assessment Guide was developed as a resource to assist clinicians in making level of care assessments. As such, LASAM recommended that a future iteration of the proposal recognize this guide as an acceptable alternative to the proposed comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessment. LASAM also noted that ASAM is currently developing an Adolescent Volume of The ASAM Criteria set to be released in 2026. This volume of the criteria will introduce new levels of care for the treatment of substance use disorder in adolescents. LASAM offered further assistance to the agency once the Adolescent Volume is released.
