PSAM Supports Legislation Regulating Kratom Products in Pennsylvania
On December 1, the Pennsylvania Society of Addiction Medicine (PSAM), along with the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society (PaPS), sent a letter of support for HB 2058 and SB 899 to the leadership of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and State Senate. Together, these bills would establish regulations for the sale of kratom products in Pennsylvania.
In the letter, PSAM asserted that a growing number of Pennsylvanians are being negatively impacted by kratom products. The letter points out that high-potency kratom products are sold unregulated at gas stations and convenience stores throughout the state, presenting significant public health risks. PSAM noted that its members increasingly report treating patients with kratom poisoning, addiction, and withdrawal. As such, PSAM praised HB 2058 and SB 899 as an important starting point for regulating kratom with an eye towards protecting consumers and public health.
